8 Simple Ways To Create A Calm & Peaceful Home
Our homes are our sanctuaries; our safe places to retreat to at the end of a long day and where we spend time with the people we cherish the most. But, how harmonious does your home feel? When you look around does it fill you with gratitude and a feeling of calm? Or, is it feeling a little stagnant and cluttered?
Just like us, our homes retain energy which needs to be refreshed and encouraged to flow. But how can we achieve that? Well, you'll be pleased to know that it's really quite simple - and it doesn't cost much in terms of time or money. I've shared my favourite tips here in the hope that it inspires you to get started and create a more calm and peaceful home...
INCREASE NATURAL LIGHT
Have you ever noticed how opening the curtains or blinds on a sunny day makes you feel better? Well it does the same for your home too. So, whatever the weather, throw open the curtains and blinds and let the natural light flow through your home.
REDUCE CLUTTER
Even if your clutter is well organised or hidden away in drawers and cupboards, it still creates stagnant energy in your home. Clutter drains energy from you and your home. Tackle it - one step at a time if you have - and you’ll be amazed at the feeling of harmony and peace that it creates. If you can then set aside regular time to de-clutter, and then create a plan to stay on top of things you'll love how different it makes your home feel. MORE FRESH AIR
One of the first things I do every morning is throw open the windows - even in the coldest months. It's so good to let the fresh air flow through every room, helping to move the sleepy energy that's built up overnight and energising everywhere for the day ahead. Try it and see how much better your home feels. Remember the smaller spaces too like cupboards; be sure to leave the doors open once in a while to help replace the build of energy in them.
FIND A FEW QUIET MOMENTS
How often do you feel overwhelmed or anxious? They're common feelings and most of us feel that way at some time during the day. But, finding a few minutes to pause and appreciate a quiet moment (without interruption) can help restore clarity and perspective back to your day – this works particularly well at the start and end of your day. Try it just before bed too, if you need to calm your mind before going to sleep.
USE AROMATHERAPY OILS AND CANDLES
The wonderful thing about aromatherapy oils is there’s one for every mood. Try sweet orange to help raise a smile and calm a busy mind or frankincense to lift your mood. Then of course there's the soothing oil of lavender to help reduce stress, calm an overactive mind and evoke deep relaxation.
Lighting a candle always creates a comforting feeling in your home while filling it with a beautiful scent. Feel the natural benefits of aromatherapy by choosing a high quality soy wax candle made with essential oils. My favourites include our Peace Meditation Candle made from calming lavender essential oil which brings a sense of harmony and peace to your home. And our Gratitude Meditation Candle made from the uplifting oil of lemongrass to help raise your mood and count your blessings.
PRACTISE FENG SHUI
Feng Shui is all about the flow of chi, or energy, through your home. By positioning items in your home to aid in the flow of chi, you can feel more in tune with your home and your outlook on life. If your mind is cluttered, your home is likely to be the same. It’s a subject that’s fascinated me for years, if you get a chance then look it up or find a beginner’s guide and see what you think!
PLAY SOOTHING MUSIC
It could be a babbling brook, sounds of nature, or some gentle meditative music that calms your mind and soul. Discover what works for you; something that encourages you to take a deep breath and helps to slow down your mind. Play it often. As relaxation is the goal try and keep the volume fairly low so that it can be heard without overwhelming your senses.
INTRODUCE MORE NATURE
There are so many ways you can do this. I love to have indoor plants in as many rooms as I can - and I manage to keep most of them alive these days too. It brings me joy to nurture them and watch them grow. But you don’t have to be green-fingered. Look out for low maintenance plants or introduce pieces into your home made from natural materials like wood. They all help to create balance and bring the outdoors in. Choose one or two of these to help you create a more calm and peaceful home, they'll all make a difference, I promise. And, remember that our homes are often a reflection of how we feel. So, if you can re-energise your space and clear the clutter you'll undoubtedly feel much calmer in yourself...try it and see.
